Jobs, Hobbies and Careers…

A living circuit-like cable threads through several separate gray boxes, symbolizing one enduring software career spanning many jobs.

Yesterday, I talked about jobs and careers…

A subscriber asked… "What's the difference?"

Here is how I see it…

First… Let's recognize that there is an obvious difference between a "job" and a "hobby"…

A hobby is something you do because you love to do it.

You can be very good at it.
Sometimes, amateurs are better than the professionals!
(Until 1988, the Olympics was amateur-only for example…)

Yet… You don't get paid to do it…

In fact… You probably spend money on a hobby!
(For some people, getting paid would even spoil the fun…)

On the other side, in a job, you get paid to do it.
You do it well, you are good at it for sure.
But you only do it because you get paid.

The moment someone stops paying you, you stop doing it.

A career is an evolution of the two…

It's something you do well, you're good at.
You get paid for it, so you can do it more…
But… You also do it because you love it!

So, even if no one pays you, you will continue to do it…

So, imagine a hobby you love to have…
And you getting paid to do what you love…
Isn't that great?

That's what a "career" is…

That's the idea behind the famous saying "do what you love and you'll never work a day in your life"…

Now…

No need to romanticize it…
You will probably have lots of jobs in your career!

For example, if you're a software developer and you love what you do, you'd probably still write software even if no one paid you.

You'd create applications for yourself, participate in open-source projects, or help your family and friends. Maybe you would create software for some other hobby!

But of course, because this is a career… you also get paid to do it.

Now… Your current job, where you apply your software development skills, is just that… a job.

If the bank or e-commerce site you work for stops paying you, you wouldn't keep working for them.

You can have lots of different jobs, working for many companies…

But your career… is your career!

That's why I love thinking of careers in the long term.
How can you invest in and build your career, through many jobs.

Because if you can turn your job into a career…
Or…
Turn your hobby into a career…

That's when "you'll never work a day in your life"…
